Roasting Ears of Corn Festival – A Taste of Tradition

When: Saturday & Sunday, August 16–17
Where: Museum of Indian Culture, Allentown

If your family’s in the mood for a summertime tradition with a side of history, the Roasting Ears of Corn Festival is calling your name. Known as Pennsylvania’s oldest Native American–themed festival, it’s a weekend of mouthwatering roasted corn, cultural demonstrations, traditional dance, storytelling, and artisan crafts. The air will be rich with the smell of open-fire cooking, and everywhere you turn, there’s something new for curious kids to discover.

Why families will love it

  • Juicy roasted corn, cooked the way it’s been for generations

  • Live cultural performances that make history come alive

  • Interactive learning opportunities for school-age kids and teens

Parent tips

  • Bring folding chairs or a picnic blanket—festival seating can fill quickly

  • Sun protection is your friend (hat + sunscreen)

  • Check the schedule for specific performance times so you don’t miss your favorites

Nor-Bath Trail – Smooth, Scenic, and Stroller-Friendly

When: Anytime (open daily)
Where: Trail runs between Northampton and Bath

The Nor-Bath Trail is a gentle, paved rail-trail perfect for strollers, scooters, bikes, and little legs still learning to pedal. Stretching almost 6 miles, it weaves through peaceful countryside, shaded patches, and open stretches where you can spot wildflowers and maybe even a bunny or two. With multiple access points, you can pick a short out-and-back or go big with a longer ride.

Why families will love it

  • Flat, safe, and easy to navigate for all ages

  • Mix of sunny and shaded sections to keep everyone comfortable

  • Fresh-air exercise without the steep hills or tricky terrain

Parent tips

  • Pack plenty of water and a small snack for mid-trail breaks

  • Use a bike trailer or scooter for younger kids to keep the pace fun

  • Start early in the morning for a quieter, cooler ride

Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center – Where Nature Meets History

When: Open daily; check calendar for special programs
Where: Belfast, PA

The Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center offers 1,168 acres of trails, forests, and streams—plus a fascinating slice of Pennsylvania history. Families can explore the rare old-growth Henry’s Woods, watch for hawks overhead, or step into the past with living history demonstrations tied to the state’s early gunmaking industry. Whether you go for the hike or the heritage, there’s always something to discover.

Why families will love it

  • Miles of trails ranging from easy strolls to moderate hikes

  • Opportunities to learn about Pennsylvania’s craft history

  • Prime spot for nature photography and birdwatching

Parent tips

  • Wear closed-toe shoes—some trails have roots and rocks

  • Check the visitor center or website for demo times before you go

  • Bring binoculars and a field guide for a kid-friendly scavenger hunt

Delaware Canal Towpath – Riverside Rambles & History Lessons

When: Anytime (open daily)
Where: Access in Easton and points along the Delaware River

The Delaware Canal Towpath is a peaceful, flat trail running beside the old canal and river. Once the route for mules towing cargo boats, it’s now a haven for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Kids can spot turtles sunning themselves, watch herons fish in the shallows, and imagine what life was like when the canal was bustling with trade.

Why families will love it

  • Easy walking and biking with water views the whole way

  • Wildlife sightings that keep kids engaged

  • Sneaky history lesson about Pennsylvania’s canal era

Parent tips

  • Bring a picnic and take a break at one of the riverside clearings

  • Be mindful of shared use—cyclists and joggers use the same path

  • After your walk, explore nearby Easton for ice cream or lunch
